Shaun Appert '26 Achieves Rank of Eagle Scout

Notre Dame proudly celebrates Shaun Appert '26 for achieving the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor in the Boy Scouts of America! Shaun's journey culminated in an impactful service project for the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (TASK), demonstrating outstanding leadership and dedication to his community. He embodies Notre Dame’s Mercy Core Values of Service, Compassion, Justice, Integrity, and Respect.

Shaun's project was directly inspired by his volunteer experience at TASK in January 2024, with the Notre Dame Swimming Team. During his time at the soup kitchen, he noticed patrons waiting for the facility to open were sitting on uncomfortable milk crates and cardboard boxes. This observation led to a discussion with TASK’s Volunteer Coordinator, Monica Smith, and the COO, and the development of a two-part plan to enhance patron comfort and security.

Shaun decided to install five durable aluminum benches under the outdoor heaters. These benches were chosen because they are rust-proof and could be bolted into the concrete, preventing theft or unauthorized movement. Shaun successfully led a team of scouts and friends to execute his vision, assembling the benches before they were transported to TASK for final placement and installation.

Additionally, the TASK staff shared concerns about patrons' phones being stolen while charging in the dining room. To address this, Shaun designed and built a secure phone charging station. This station is a lockable box featuring individual cubbies for phones. The system is managed by volunteers, who hold the key and monitor the process. Patrons receive a numbered claim ticket when leaving their phone to charge. This thoughtful solution ensures patrons can access an essential service—charging their phones—while keeping their belongings protected.

He demonstrated leadership and dedication throughout the process and was able to see the direct results of the bench installation approximately one month after they were installed. On that day, the temperature was in the high 90s, and because TASK’s air conditioner was broken, meals were being distributed outside.

"When I arrived, I saw many patrons occupying the benches and the surrounding area," Shaun recounted. "Seeing this was the most rewarding aspect because I got to see the results of my hard work and leadership in action."

Shaun’s project was a success both in execution and fundraising. He successfully raised a total of $3,877.50. Of this total, $2,789.13 covered the project costs, and the remaining $1,088.37 was donated directly to TASK to support their essential services.

Notre Dame congratulates Shaun Appert '26 on this monumental achievement! His dedication to service and commitment to his community truly exemplify the spirit of both Eagle Scouts and of Notre Dame.
