Books You Should Read!

Laura Bedser '19

If I hadn’t made it clear already, I love to read. Here’s a handful of phenomenal books that left a lasting impression on me. I hope you’ll give them a try, too!
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
This book is incredibly important. A narrative from 16-year old Starr, this story is a fictional account similar to the real-life horrors that sparked the necessary Black Lives Matter movement. If you told me you would only read one book from this list, this would be the one I recommended.

C’mon, it’s 2019! If you haven’t read this fantasy series already, you’ve definitely at least heard of it. Follow Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley on a journey full of magic and growth as they fight against evil. More than just books about a school of magic, you will see pieces of yourself reflected in each carefully crafted character.

Wonder by R.J. Palacio
While this book is more middle-grade, it carries important messages from the fresh and clever perspective of 5th grader Auggie, as well as his friends and family. Although we may look different, we all want to be loved and belong.

Divergent by Veronica Roth
I read this dystopian novel in middle school. It was dynamic, exciting, and completely pulled me away from those middle-school struggles we all know all too well. While the rest of the series did not impact me as strongly, reading this book was like a vacation. Sixteen-year-old Beatrice’s character arc of finding herself in an exciting world plagued with conformity is one someone of any age would enjoy.

The Harry Potter series and Divergent are worlds unique to our own, while Wonder and The Hate U Give focus on modern, real-world issues. There are many more amazing books out there, but if you’re looking for a place to start, these books are a good jumping off point. Happy reading!
