Nominated by students, parents, faculty and staff, Teachers of the Year are awarded annually. This is the second year Notre Dame has awarded a Staff Member of the Year. Both Mrs. Walter and Mr. Chebra are Notre Dame alumni; Mrs. (Wright) Walter graduated in 2006 and Mr. Chebra is a member of the Class of 1998.
Mrs. Walter, a faculty member in the Mathematics Department, began teaching at Notre Dame in 2014. This semester, she teaches Algebra 2 and Pre-Calculus and is grateful to receive this award.
“This means that my students and their families feel the same about me as I feel towards them. I value my position here at Notre Dame to the highest honor,” she said. “Every semester, I meet and get to encourage new students who seem to come back year after year for my math courses as well as advice on how to further their math career.”
One parent echoed her thoughts. “She is a teacher who puts students first,” said the parent. “Because of her efforts, my son finished with a B and, more importantly, for the first time, he finally felt like he understood math. After taking her class, he is now more confident and determined to pursue his dream of being an engineer.”
When nominating Dr. Bridgewater, one student said, “One thing he cares more about than the subject being taught, are the students who sit in his class.”
Dr. Bridgewater, a faculty member in the Science Department since 2015, shares these sentiments when speaking about his students.
“At the start of every semester, in every class, I tell my students that I am the luckiest teacher in the world because I have the best students in the world,” said Dr. Bridgewater. “I tell that to everyone I meet too, and I mean every word of it. I always strive to work with my students and steer clear of having them work for me, that way we're all part of the same team - something that helps them now, but also prepares those who are headed to a career in the sciences for the team-based realities of how science is really done.”
Mr. Chebra, A/V Media Specialist in the Technology Department, has worked tirelessly to prepare Notre Dame’s newly-renovated Auditorium for its spring musical and monthly Liturgies. He can be found in our Broadcast Studio, where he works with students to produce Morning Announcements and ND commercials. As the A/V Media Specialist, he also works in the Auditorium technical booth, directing the sound and lighting for Notre Dame productions.
“He is a critical part of the Notre Dame ‘machine.’ His positive and supportive attitude means we are never afraid to reach out for help,” said a colleague.
“It’s an absolute honor to be selected as Staff Member of the Year. To know the work I do here is appreciated, fills my heart,” said Mr. Chebra. “Thank you to everyone who nominated me and those who have taken the time to congratulate me in person, via email or otherwise.”
Congratulations Mrs. Walter, Dr. Bridgewater and Mr. Chebra!
