Students Bring Home Medals

By: Maia Ramos, Senior Communications Intern

This summer was one for the record books for two ND students. Senior Nick Cushman '20 traveled to Pattaya, Thailand to represent Team USA in the International Dragon Boat Federation World Championships and ND Crew Club Member, Kristen Harkins '20 won a gold medal in the U19 Women's boat at the Royal Canadian Henley.
In the International Dragon Boat Federation World Championships, Team USA placed 3rd overall, taking home 18 Gold, 24 Silver, and 27 Bronze Medals. Nick was able to bring home 3 Bronze Medals for himself!

His journey to the World Championship began back in early 2019 when Nick was invited by the United States Dragon Boat Federation to join the Team USA U18 Dragon Boat. To secure a spot on the team, Nick had to make a specific time in the Outrigger Canoe time trial. All his training paid off because he made one of the top 6 times for boys under 18. After that, he spent the next few weeks practicing in Philadelphia and New Hope in preparation for Worlds.

“Overall, Worlds is an experience I will never forget because I was able to compete with elite athletes from all over the globe. Most of all, it was an honor to represent the USA.”

On the other side of the globe, ND Crew Club members Kristen Harkins ‘20, Brady Stergion '19, Joe DiRusso '21, George Drago '21, Jack Wright '21 and Katherine Kelly '21 participated in the Royal Canadian Henley in St. Catharines, Ontario.

Jack Wright and Joe DiRusso came in a close second in the U17 Men’s 4 boat and U17 Men’s 8 boat. Krissy Harkins won herself a gold medal in the U19 Women’s boat!

Congratulations Nick and Krissy, and the rest of the ND Crew Club!
