The Wonderful Mrs. Marx

Being the mother of two, wife, teacher, mentor, and moderator of two ND clubs, isn’t easy. Yet, Mrs. Eileen Marx makes it possible --- and she does it all with passion and grace.

When asked to describe herself in three adjectives, Mrs. Marx paused. With her hand on her chin, she pondered an answer.  “I can’t really come up with three. I would say I am passionate. Maybe too passionate at times, when it comes to issues of social justice and living out our Catholic social teaching. I feel incredibly passionate about those issues.”

That passion for social justice issues, gives Mrs. Marx great respect for young people who are inspired to address those controversies.

For example, the students at Parkland High are an inspiration to her because "they speak on sensible gun control laws." She is also inspired by Greta Thunberg and her work with the environment and even by her own students. "I am inspired by my students like Emma McKeon, who went to hear Greta speak about taking care of our planet and its people."

Family is at the center of her world and they are also her inspiration. Her husband and two children can most definitely vouch for this statement. Mrs. Marx has been married to Mr. Marx for 34 years. She vividly describes the first time she met him and how they met like it was yesterday.  “He was playing frisbee and had long hair down to his shoulders, a Yankee hat, and ripped jeans. The frisbee landed near me and my friend and I thought, I wanna marry him!"

She expresses the same excitement when she talks about her two children. Her smile grows wide and her face lights up as she shows a picture of them. “This is Teresa, she’s 27, and is a teacher in Chicago. And this is Bobby. He’s 29 and is in charge of inventory in a Chicago office of a bike company,"

Mrs. Marx is not just a mother to her own children, but also a mother to her students and club members at Notre Dame High School. She has been teaching here since September 2002, and what she has to say about her career and the impact that students have had on her life, is truly heartwarming. “It is an absolute privilege to accompany the kids on their journey to self discovery and what their faith means to them." She explains that teaching is a two way relationship between the teacher and student because teachers receive great insight into young people’s lives when they open up their hearts and share. This has helped her become more aware about what is happening in the world. “It makes me feel wonderful and energized."

The passionate, dedicated, and determined Mrs. Marx has made a major difference and change in Notre Dame High School through her work as moderator of the Shades Club and Justice Club.Charity events like Hoops for Hope, originated from the Shades Club three years ago. It is an event in which faculty members and students make their own basketball team and play against fellow classmates and teachers. A great number of people enjoyed this event so much, that it became an annual school-wide event that students and faculty look forward to yearly.  This was not the only new event the Shades Club organized that became annual in the school’s calendar. Black History Month was never truly celebrated in Notre Dame, until Mrs. Marx organized a liturgy Mass in honor of Black History Month. It is a beautiful and informative Mass, that includes Gospel music and tribal African American dances. This helped students become more educated on the history and progression of African American culture.“Out of anything I have ever done at this school, any course I’ve taught, any activity I’ve been involved with, without question, the most fulfilling work for me has been being a moderator of the Shades Club.”

Before Mrs. Marx was a teacher, and before she was a moderator of any club, she was a journalist. “For the first 20 years of my professional life, I worked in the field of Communications. I began as a news reporter and then worked at a TV station in Washington, DC."  She was a producer, writer, director of communications, and worked with the Washington media.

Mrs. Marx is also an author and has written her own book called
Weaving Faith and Family when You’re Hanging on by a Thread.

Mrs. Marx continues to embrace all the talents God has given her. She puts her whole heart, mind, and soul into every project she participates in, and every person she communicates with. It doesn’t matter if a student struggles in class or is an A student; she treats everyone fairly with love and respect.

Eileen Marx’s ears and arms are open to every color, ethnicity, culture, background, and status, because we are her children.

As a student who has struggled through difficult times, I can vouch for this. When I needed a shoulder to cry on or someone to vent to, she was there.

At the end of my interview with this inspiring lady, she complimented me. “You are like another daughter to me. Your energy and zest for life makes other people around you smile," said Mrs. Marx - proving my point that she is a loving, passionate, kind-hearted, understanding, sympathetic, and nurturing woman.

She is my second mother.

She is Mrs. Eileen Marx.
