Hana Voacolo, class of 2021, loves to binge-watch Switched at Birth on Netflix. “This show is so entertaining,” says Hana, “it made me want to start learning ASL.”
Switched at Birth ran on Freeform (formerly ABCFamily) for five seasons from 2011 to 2017.It follows the lives of teenage girls Bay and Daphne, and their families, after discovering the girls were, as the title of the show suggests, switched at birth. The deaf community also has a great presence within the show; many major and minor characters, both deaf and hearing, communicate using American Sign Language, also called ASL.
