Study Shows Teen Vaping has Doubled in Past Year

Zachary Klein '20
A new study shows that teen vaping has increased dramatically in the last year. The study reported that 37.2% of high school seniors reported “some vaping” in the past twelve months. Seniors who said they have just vaped “flavor” has also increased from 20.8% to 25.7%. What has caused this large increase?
Additionally, 1 in 5 high seniors and 1 in 6 sophomores said they have used nicotine products in the past 30 days. That’s nearly doubled from 2017.

Sophomores and eighth graders reported that the vape devices are “fairly easy to get”, with 66.6 and 45.7% of the students agreeing with this question.

“The absolute increases in the prevalence of nicotine vaping among 12th-graders and 10th-graders are the largest ever recorded by Monitoring the Future in the 44 years that it has continuously tracked dozens of substances,” wrote a team led by Richard Miech, who helps run the study at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research.

Makers of e-cigarettes say their products are meant for adults. Many of the products were banned from online retailers in September, but study leaders believe that further action is needed to stop the vaping epidemic across America.
