Cheryl Harris Chosen to Lead Irish Field Hockey

Notre Dame High School Athletic Director Rich Roche announces the hiring of Cheryl Harris as the new Irish Field Hockey Coach. Harris, who succeeds Barb Major who recently retired after 50 years at the helm, will be just the third Varsity Field Hockey Coach in Notre Dame history with Major and Mary Colvy preceding her.
Harris, a faculty member in the Mathematics Department at Notre Dame, has coached in the program for 20 years, spending 15 years coaching the Freshman Team and five years as Major’s Assistant Coach with the Varsity Team.

Harris played four years of field hockey at Hudson High School in Massachusetts. At Hudson, she was a two-time captain and MVP as a senior. She continued her playing career at Framingham State University (MA) where she was a four-year starter and winner of the Coaches Award as a senior.

Harris’ coaching career began when she took on the position of Assistant at Framingham State in 1992-1993. She spent one season as the JV Coach at Hudson High School before moving on to Notre Dame

“I am very excited and grateful to be given the opportunity to lead the Field Hockey program,” Harris said. “I know that I have big shoes to fill and I am excited to get to work.”

Notre Dame will return a solid core group of players for Harris to work with next season. “I love Notre Dame High School and I love these girls,” Harris continued.

“In the nine years I have worked with Cheryl, she has been the consummate professional,” Roche said. “Her passion for Field Hockey and, more importantly, her passion for coaching the young women in our program, is evident. I am confident that Cheryl will do very well.”
